The research team of Khon Kaen University led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metha Wannapat, Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, launched an innovative research project: Supplements for Ruminants from Medical Plants to Drive the Livestock Industry in Line with the BCG” Creating Sustainability in the Animal Husbandry Industry and Producing High-Efficiency and Low-Cost Supplements From Challenges to Research on Formulas for Ruminants In the past, the use of herbal plant extracts in animal supplements was still new and required acceptance from farmers and entrepreneurs in the animal husbandry industry. Research and testing were required to confirm efficacy and safety. According to the Department of Livestock Development, the use of cannabis, hemp, and kratom as supplements for farm animals is an interesting new topic, especially in hemp plants, which are high in protein and energy-providing nutrients, omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, as well as 17 types of amino acids, most notably Glutamic acid, Leucine, Lysine, and Methionine. This challenge led Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metha Wannapat and the research team from the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Khon Kaen University, to start researching formulas for supplements for ruminants. By using extracts from cannabis, hemp and kratom, which is considered research that there are still very few researchers in Asia, focusing on giving animals high quality food, helping to reduce costs in the animal husbandry industry and helping farmers reduce animal husbandry expenses and increase profits, as well as helping to reduce the production of methane gas which causes global warming.
